Gastrointestinal problems are very common
Most people will have experienced some of the symptoms listed below several times throughout their lives. This include conditions such as: gas and/or bloating, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), heartburn or reflux, chronic diarrhoea or constipation and poor digestion or one of the more serious disorders such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease. For women the symptoms may be worse 1-2 weeks before the period.

Managing the symptoms of digestive disorders

Natural therapies can be very effective in restoring balance, health and vitality to all our body systems, including our digestive system. The natural therapist’s approach can be achieved through appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes, and through the use of specific, individually prescribed herbal medicines and nutritional supplements. Restoring healthy gut bacterial flora (ecology) is usually a requirement for the successful care of many conditions.

The function of the digestive system

The primary purpose of the gastrointestinal tract is to break food down into nutrients, which can be absorbed into the body to provide energy. After swallowing, digestion occurs mainly in the stomach and small intestine where proteins, fats and carbohydrates are chemically broken down. These small molecules are then absorbed across the wall of the small intestine and enter circulation.

The large intestine plays a key role in reabsorbing excess water. Undigested material and secreted waste products are then excreted from the body via defecation (passing of faeces).

In the case of gastrointestinal disease or disorders, these functions of the gastrointestinal tract are not achieved successfully, and may develop symptoms of nausea, or vomiting, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation, pain and absorption.
